Rethink Afghanistan

Film and Audience Discussion May 7, 2010

“Rethink Afghanistan is a brilliant masterpiece” - Thom Hartmann

“A wakeup call for those who still believe our military should be in Afghanistan -- Rethink Afghanistan should be the Saturday matinee at the White House.” - Michael Moore

“In-your-face, makes-you-think documentary. What are we doing there? Do these people really want us? An indispensable guide to what’s really going on in Afghanistan. Not what you read in the mainstream newspapers or see on television.” - Oliver Stone

Arianna Huffington, The Huffington Post, 10-4-09: “In Rethink Afghanistan, Robert Greenwald's powerful look at the war (and a film Joe Biden should see right away), Robert Baer, a former CIA field operative says, ‘The notion that we're in Afghanistan to make our country safer is just complete bull****... what it's doing is causing us greater danger, no question about it. Because the more we fight in Afghanistan, the more the conflict is pushed across the border into Pakistan, the more we destabilize Pakistan, the more likely it is that a fundamentalist government will take over the army -- and we'll have Al-Qaeda like groups with nuclear weapons.’”

The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil

Film and Audience Discussion 12/4/09

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call "The Special Period." The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope.

GAZA STRIP: A Glendale Peace Vigil film forum

Film and Discussion

GAZA STRIP

This documentary by James Longley focuses on ordinary Palestinians rather than politicians and pundits. It provides the candid realism of the cinema verité style, presented without narration. More observation than political argument, GAZA STRIP offers a rare look inside the stark realities of Palestinian life under Israeli military occupation in 2001.

Our guest moderator, DON BUSTANY, has produced and hosted KPFK’s weekly program “Middle East in Focus” since 1996. His program often includes guests who passionately disagree about the actions of the Israeli government and the history of this region. On air Bustany consistently demonstrates an outstanding ability to keep these discussions calm and civil. “Middle East in Focus” is broadcast in southern California Wednesdays 8-9 pm on the Pacifica Radio Network’s station KPFK 90.7 fm and worldwide on www.kpfk.org.

FILM FORUM: "View from a Grain of Sand" Friday, November 14th, 2008

Film and Discussion

Shot in the sprawling refugee camps of the North West Frontier Province in Pakistan and Kabul, Afghanistan, View From A Grain of Sand foregrounds the individual voices of three Afghan women, each dramatically affected by the different regimes of the last twenty-five years. Principal taping began almost a year prior to September 11, 2001. At that time the issues of Afghan women’s rights were of little interest to the international community. Subsequently returning to the region in November 2001, the director was uniquely positioned to portray the extraordinary shift, which had taken Afghan women from being a forgotten population to becoming a focus of global outcry.

Through the personal stories of these women, the broader history of Afghanistan (since the late 1970s) is elucidated, offering a first-person perspective on the socio-political context behind the situation in which the refugees now find themselves. The documentary follows the three women over a period of three years: 2000, 2001 and 2003, to form a continuum through a period of dramatic change going from one year before the Taliban fell, during the time of their fall, and one year after.

FILM FORUM: "In Debt We Trust" Friday, February 8th!

Film and Discussion

IN DEBT WE TRUST, by Emmy-winning journalist Danny Schechter, is a hard-hitting documentary investigating "financialization,” the process by which corporations and Congress have forged a powerful "debt-and-credit industrial complex" now strangling the U.S. economy. While many may be "maxing out" on credit cards, there is a deeper story here: power is shifting into fewer hands, with frightening consequences. "What's been called the ‘democratization of credit,’” explains Schechter, “has led to the democratization of dependency. It has created an unsustainable society, trapping millions in a financial hole they can't escape from and often do not understand."

As we all face the new economic realities -- rising prices for food, gas, and housing, unprecedented numbers of foreclosures and bankruptcies, growing budget cuts, the plummeting dollar, and astronomical levels of national and personal debt -- this film speaks to issues we all can relate to. Deeper than the news, fast-paced, musically charged, and highly informative, IN DEBT WE TRUST is film-making with an angry edge, a broad and well-documented scope, and a compelling call to action for us all.

FILM FORUM: "War Made Easy"

Film and Discussion w/ special Costume Contest!

War Made Easy reaches into the Orwellian memory hole to expose a 50-year pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the United States into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq. Narrated by actor and activist Sean Penn, the film exhumes remarkable archival footage of official distortion and exaggeration from LBJ to George W. Bush, revealing in stunning detail how the American news media have uncritically disseminated the pro-war messages of successive presidential administrations.

War Made Easy gives special attention to parallels between the Vietnam war and the war in Iraq. Guided by media critic Norman Solomon’s meticulous research and tough-minded analysis, the film presents disturbing examples of propaganda and media complicity from the present alongside rare footage of political leaders and leading journalists from the past, including Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, dissident Senator Wayne Morse, and news correspondents Walter Cronkite and Morley Safer.

FILM FORUM: "The Ground Truth"

GLENDALE PEACE VIGIL FILM FORUM:

Hailed as "powerful" and "quietly unflinching," Patricia Foulkrod's searing documentary feature includes exclusive footage that will stir audiences. The filmmaker's subjects are patriotic Americans - ordinary men and women who heeded the call for military service in Iraq - as they experience recruitment and training, combat, homecoming, and the struggle to reintegrate with families and communities. The terrible conflict in Iraq, depicted with ferocious honesty in the film, is a prelude for the even more challenging battles fought by the soldiers returning home - with personal demons, an uncomprehending public, and an indifferent government. As these battles take shape, each soldier becomes a new kind of hero, bearing witness and giving support to other veterans, and learning to fearlessly wield the most powerful weapon of all - the truth.

FILM FORUM: "Why We Fight"

GLENDALE PEACE VIGIL FILM FORUM:

Prizewinner at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, "WHY WE FIGHT" pierces the veneer of nationalist rationalizations and patriotic loyalties, taking an unflinching look at the anatomy of American war making. Inspired by President Eisenhower's 1961 Farewell Address (warning Americans of the mounting dangers of the "military-industrial complex"), filmmaker Eugene Jarecki explores a half-century of U.S. foreign policy from World War II to the Iraq War. Weaving together unforgettable stories of everyday Americans touched by a war, with commentary by a "who's who" of military and Washington insiders, "WHY WE FIGHT" reveals many ways in which political and corporate interests are alarmingly entangled in America's business of war.

FILM: "Occupation Dreamland" - Friday, May 12, 2006

GLENDALE PEACE VIGIL FILM FORUM:

Occupation: Dreamland is an unflinchingly candid portrait of a squad of American soldiers deployed in the doomed Iraq city of Falluja during the winter of 2004. A collective study of the soldiers unfolds as they patrol an environment of low-intensity conflict creeping steadily towards catastrophe. Through the squads activities Occupation: Dreamland provides a vital glimpse into the last days of Falluja. The film documents the citys waning stability before a final series of military assaults began in the spring of 2004 that effectively destroyed it.
