Sounding a Call for Solidarity - Glendale News-Press 4/12/2006

Sounding a call for solidarity
By Mike Gomez

Dear Americans:

Firstly, I would like to congratulate the former mayor of Glendale for standing tall in defense of individual rights, civil liberties and justice and freedom ("Council fails to oppose immigration reform bill," March 23). A million thanks to Rafi Manoukian. His decision to bring a resolution against H.R. 4437, the Border Protection, Anti-terrorism and Illegal Immigration Control Act, is an act of true patriotism.

Reform is Needed in Tax System
by Richard Seeley

In response to Chuck Sambar's Community Commentary in the March 30 Glendale News-Press ("Time to pay the piper"): While I agree that bonds are the most expensive method of financing public programs, we don't need to raise taxes to resolve the problem, we merely need to reform the federal and state income-tax system.

Citizens for Tax Justice in Washington, D.C., a well-respected organization, indicates that the top 1% of income earners pay an effective tax rate of 5.2%. Families in the middle 20% income bracket pay at the rate of 9.6% while those earners in the poorest 20% pay at an 11.4% rate, or more than double the effective rate of the very wealthy.
